In high school I played in a band. Trying to prove myself to fellow bandmates as well as sticking it to the man, this band led to an emo phase which I guess was also the gateway drug into grunge and rock. Stop Thinking About It, A Letter To Elise and We Used To Be In Love were my first breakup songs around this time, conveniently with someone also in the band. Don't judge me. I shat where I ate, or whatever the phrase is. Slaves, Strange Bones and Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes are also some of the best new/ modern alternative or kerrang kind of music, specifically around Slaves' Are You Satisfied/Take Control and Frank Carter's Blossom/ End Of Ruin eras. It was also when I started DiScOvErInG alcohol and co, and some of my best memories of sneaking about and jumping up and down to class music with friends were at these gigs in Manchester (big up Manchester Academy and Albert Hall). As I listened to and discovered more, I realised the music I'd been moaning at my dad to turn off, was actually my new vibe. Then came Christine and The Queens at Parklife. She's everything I want to be in a performer, queer woman and artist (and I have a hugeeee crush on her). I'd loved Bowie as soon as I'd been played Young Americans by my auntie, but when Christine and The Queens covered Heroes, the tears were almost unbearable. To me, the song is about defying the odds, being a good person and living with love. This song had got me through days that seemed impossible as well as mental health issues, and as soon as the tears came, I knew I would always remember that moment. I got a 'Heroes' tattoo a few days after.

So that's my first playlist, have a listen and imagine teenage me with an afro trying to paste a greasy side fringe to my forehead (and also my glasses).

I hope you have whatever kind of day you want x
